The Rise of Unisex Perfumes

A brief history of unisex fragrances dates back to the 18th & 19th centuries, where perfume was created by your local friendly pharmacist that used natural ingredients like lavender, rose and resins. It was about creating potions that smelt good on anyone that could afford a bit of olfactory decadence. Perfume back then was not created to be used by a specific gender but rather to be used primarily by royalty and the wealthy to mask body odors resulting from the not-so-hygienic sanitary practices of the day.

In contrast, as time passed, more and more perfumers started creating scents that were gender-specific with ad campaigns predetermining what sex the perfume was for.  This was a trend that started back in the 19th century, and is still implemented today. For instance, perfume manufacturers use this method as a way to determine whether a scent will be suitable for male or female.

Above all else however, in recent years, one of the biggest perfume trends have been development of the Unisex perfumes.  Unisex fragrances exemplify how people are no longer confined by perfumes that are labelled “For Him” or “For Her” or similarly adopting scents that are floral and feminine or masculine and woodsy. Rather, individuals are beginning to choose scents based on their simple desire or enjoyment of a particular fragrance. As a result, contemporary society is noticing a strong interest in Unisex perfumes.
